According to YouTube, click-through-rate is a content creator’s views per impressions shown. YouTube states that CTR measures how often viewers watched your video after seeing an impression.
What Does An Impression Have To Do With CTR?
It is oftentimes very easy to get lost surfing through seemingly entertaining videos on YouTube. Videos pop up all over different sections and pages on the platform. Whether you are looking through your home page, trending page, or you are searching for a type of video in particular and more videos appear — your clicks have already become impressions for many creators across the platform.
An impression occurs every time a video is put in front of a person actively scrolling through YouTube. The click through rate is how many views you get based on a particular impression, and it is calculated by the percentage of people who decide to click on your video when it is placed in their field of view.
If you look through your channel analytics within your YouTube Studio, you will find your average click-through-rate as well as your click-through-rate percentage for each individual video on your channel.
This percentage correlates to the amount of views you are getting based on your impressions, as well as the length of time that people stay watching your video.
Knowing this, a very important aspect of content development is predicated on your ability to analyze and understand whether your content is good enough to hold a steady click-through-rate when it is presented to people that are interested in your niche.
Before you dive right into click-through-rate and how it affects your growth as a content creator on YouTube, you have to figure out how to get more impressions in the first place.
The most efficient way to do this is to ask yourself what causes videos to be suggested to certain individuals and what kind of visual stimulants are necessary when it comes to your content? After all, impressions are created based off of what happens to be pleasing to the eyes of viewers.
The Power Of A Title & Thumbnail
The title of your video and its thumbnail are the only two things that your impression has to offer until your video is clicked on and watched.
This goes to show that crafting a visually pleasing thumbnail and catchy title is of massive importance when your goal is to get your video and various content in front of more people.
If you create terribly ugly thumbnails for your YouTube videos, your channel will not host many impressions, views, or interactions. This is universal, and it does not matter if the content in your video is exceptional. This happens all of the time and so many creators are left wondering why their video has not gone viral even when they happen to produce some of the best content in their niche.
This is why clickbait can be so effective.
In most cases thumbnails hold more importance than the title of videos but it is definitely essential that creators do their absolute best to choose titles and thumbnails that grab people's attention.
Choosing an intriguing title can be tricky because sometimes it is tough to understand exactly what your audience wants to learn more about. Many content creators also struggle with coming up with valuable ideas.
As long as you keep your audience and niche in mind at all times when releasing videos, you should never run into any major issues with figuring out titles or thinking of high-volume keyword phrases.

Calculating CTR
In order to track your channel growth and understand your videos’ click-through rate, you can take your clicks and divide that amount by the amount of impressions your content drives.
If your videos get a thousand clicks and you also hold ten thousand impressions, you can expect your CTR to be around 10%.
This is simply because if you were to divide your clicks by your impressions, you would end up with a decimal of 0.1. Now, if you multiply this by 100 you will find the CTR percentage for the particular video that you are analyzing.
After calculating your CTR percentage by multiplying 0.1 by 100, your CTR would come out to be 10%.
Is Click-Through Rate Actually Important?
Click-through rate is obviously important if YouTube recommends your video to hundreds of thousands of people and you only manage to get one hundred people to watch it. YouTube is not going to continue to recommend that video as soon as they see that your Click-through rate is low or steadily decreasing over time. The YouTube algorithm is designed to recommend videos that prove to keep people on the platform for extensive periods of time, so you want to make sure that your videos maintain a decent click-through rate.
Simply put, if you disregard your YouTube videos analytics and your click-through rate is poor, your videos are not going to get recommended to viewers on YouTube and you will miss out on a large amount of potential channel growth.
It is also important to note that you should not get too down on yourself if you do not see your videos performing as well as you would like them to.
Click-through rate percentages can be all over the place for a number of various reasons. Do not be discouraged if one of your videos has a 3% CTR and another one of your videos has a 6.4% CTR but seems to be drawing in less channel visitors than the video with a 3% CTR.
Click-through rate is by no means a make or break factor for the success of your YouTube channel, but it can make it a lot easier for your keyword-specific videos to rank on the first page of Google or early in the search results on YouTube.
